About Samarkand
Samarkand is a major city located in southeastern Uzbekistan and it is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Central Asia. Samarkand is the capital of the Samarkand Region and a district-level city, that includes the urban-type settlements Kimyogarlar, Farhod and Khishrav. With 880,000 inhabitants (2026), it is the second-largest city in Uzbekistan After Tashkent, Dating back to its origins as ancient Maracanda, Samarkand achieved global prominence in the 14th century as the imperial capital of the Timurid Empire. The city’s identity is defined by its signature cobalt and turquoise majolica tilework, immortalized in monumental structures like Registan Square, the Gur-e-Amir mausoleum, and the sacred avenue of mausoleums at Shah-i-Zinda. Reflecting its enduring geopolitical importance, the city also served as the initial capital of Soviet Uzbekistan from 1925 until 1930.
